Diyora Keldiyorova: “Becoming Athlete of the Year Was One of My Goals for 2024”

Fresh off her historic victory at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, judo champion Diyora Keldiyorova was named Best Female Athlete of the Year at the prestigious “National Sports Award – 2024” ceremony. In a brief interview, the Olympic gold medalist shared how this recognition had long been among her top ambitions.

– What does this award mean to you in terms of motivation?
— I’ve been striving for this title for the past three years, and I’m overjoyed that 2024 turned out to be the year I finally achieved it. For an athlete, being recognized as the best in your own country is just as meaningful as winning at the Olympics. Even if you have a great career, being named the top athlete in your homeland is not always guaranteed. Now that I’ve earned it, I’m even more determined to deliver stronger performances moving forward.

– Although you couldn’t attend the award ceremony, how did it feel to be named the winner?
— Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there in person, but I still felt the excitement of the event. There are so many talented athletes in Uzbekistan, so being chosen as the winner among them is truly an honor. One of my goals for this year was not only Olympic gold, but also earning this title — and I’m proud to have accomplished both.

– We wish you success in the IJF’s global athlete rankings as well.
— Thank you so much. I’m deeply grateful to all my fellow citizens who continue to support me. Your encouragement means the world.

Diyora Keldiyorova’s achievements reflect not just her elite athleticism but also her deep commitment to making her nation proud — both on the world stage and at home.
